Alec Baldwin movie 'Rust' set to premiere 3 years after on-set shooting
View Date:2024-12-23 19:25:16
The troubled Alec Baldwin movie "Rust" has set its world premiere, three years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed on set.
The film, which resumed production last year after the on-set shooting, will premiere at the Energa Camerimage International Film Festival in Poland next month. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with director Joel Souza, cinematographer Bianca Cline, and Hutchins' mentor Stephen Lighthill.
"In the panel, following the screening of 'Rust,' the filmmakers will discuss events surrounding the film, offering insight into continuing production after Halyna's death," the festival said Thursday. "Maintaining Hutchins' artistic vision, as tremendously challenging as it was for the entire crew, was really important to the filmmakers, hoping to fulfil their duty to complete her work."
The festival, which is devoted to the art of cinematography, said the panel will also discuss Hutchins' "unique visual style," the "role of women in cinematography and their contributions to the art of filmmaking," and "safety on set."
Festival director Marek Zydowicz described the screening and panel discussion as a "special opportunity to remember" Hutchins.

Alec Baldwin's 'Rust'trial is over: These were the biggest moments
Hutchins was killed on the set of "Rust" in October 2021 after a gun that Baldwin was holding accidentally went off, fatally shooting her and injuring Souza. Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter, but his case was abruptly dismissed in July over allegations that prosecutors withheld evidence.
A jury found the armorer on the film, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, guilty of involuntary manslaughter, and she was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
In October 2022, it was announced that "Rust" would resume filming as Baldwin and the film's production company reached a settlement in a lawsuit brought by Hutchins' family. Hutchins' husband, Matthew Hutchins, serves as executive producer on the movie.
"I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna's final work," Hutchins said in a statement provided to USA TODAY at the time.

By May 2023, Baldwin confirmed that he had wrapped filming. "God, it felt good to shave off that beard…" he wrote on Instagram.
"Rust" follows a 13-year-old boy "who, left to fend for himself and his younger brother following their parents' deaths in 1880s Wyoming, goes on the run with his long-estranged grandfather after he's sentenced to hang for the accidental killing of a local rancher," according to a synopsis provided by the festival.
